How Acne Scar Laser Treatment Works

Laser scar treatment is performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to 1.5 hours. During the procedure, a laser is moved along the scar. Ablative lasers, such as Er: YAG lasers, remove the outer layers of the skin, exposing the more youthful skin beneath. As the skin heals, the appearance of the scars is reduced. Non ablative lasers target the lower layers of the skin, stimulating new collagen growth and a healing response. Non ablative laser scar treatment is an increasingly popular alternative to ablative scar.

Acne laser scar treatment is not appropriate for everyone. If you have a skin disorder like psoriasis, dermatitis, or cystic acne, you are not a candidate. In addition, if you’re on medications like isotretinoin, you must stop taking it for six months prior to undergoing laser scar treatment. Only certain types of lasers, such as nd: YAG, Diode, and IPL, are suitable for people with dark skin.

Which Type of Laser Scar Treatment Is Right for You?

There are several different types of acne scar laser treatment methods to choose from, and each has its benefits and drawbacks. If you have acne scarring, CO2 and Er: YAG lasers are the best choice. These ablative lasers essentially sandblast the outer layers of your skin. The results are dramatic, but takes your skin long to heal from the treatment. Fractionated CO2 and Er: YAG lasers only treat a fraction of the skin by creating tiny wounds in the lower layers of the skin.

Through a controlled wound healing process, the body repairs the treated areas. With fractionated CO2 and Er: YAG laers, multiple treatments are required in order to achieve significant results.

Aftercare

After laser scar treatment, wash the treated area gently with mild soap, apply an antibiotic ointment, and use a nonstick bandage. Your doctor may prescribe medication to prevent the area from becoming infected, as well as medication to relieve pain and discomfort. In addition, your doctor may have you apply a medicated  acne scar cream to the treated area to help the scar fade.

It is particularly important to work on already treated skin to facilitate the passage of light and reduce these transient aggravations and to respect a period of at least 6 months after stopping isotretinoin
